Holy mother of God. This is a real book.

Apparently, it’s to help kids understand and cope with a parent’s arrest.

I’m looking forward to the sequel: The Day Daddy Knocked Over A Liquor Store & Took Us On The Lam.

Uh…this is a serious issue for a lot of kids. Especially African-American kids, since 1 in 3 black men will be incarcerated in his lifetime. I’m really happy that this is foreign enough to you to be funny - I was lucky not to grow up with this situation either - but for plenty of kids and parents in this country it isn’t. And it’s a good thing that this book exists to help those families - not something to be mocked.

Yeah- this book would have been extremely helpful when I taught kindergarten.

Yeah, I had one of my students’ mother get arrested twice in one school year and another students’ grandfather get arrested. Having books to discuss such rough issues, can really help the kid understand things and talk about it, and also is a great resource for adults who aren’t sure what to say (such books are usually described as bibliotherapy, which is totally the therapy for me in all situations in life).

At my last position, the father of two of our kids (ages 7 and 10) was arrested over a weekend. For the rest of my time there, whenever they saw a police car come by at our dead end, which happened now and again both for visits to try and make a positive presence for the kids and because they were looking for someone/we had to call them on someone, the younger screamed and hid and insisted that she was afraid of and hated the police, and the older just found another room, quietly, in tears, with a male friend who’d seen his share of arrests involving restraining orders and his mother’s boyfriends.

When I worked with City Year, one of my kindergarteners told me one day that he was excited, because he was going to get to visit Mommy. I asked him where he was going to visit Mommy, cheerfully, because it was a conversation and this was usually a quiet, morose little boy; he told me “in jail!”

I wish this was a joke. I also wish I’d had this book on hand in so many situations.

Being a body love warrior AND a passionate fitness & health advocate is a complicated thing sometimes.

Over the last 3 years, I’ve had to question absolutely everything I’ve held as truth when it comes to body image and fitness. How can I tell people to love their bodies as they are AND help them change those bodies? How can I help someone who wants to lose weight, do so in a way that is body loving? How can I simultaneously advise people on ways to “fix” their “flaws”, while also telling them “hey, you don’t NEED fixing!”’?

It’s been a wild ride. But I figured most of it out. And I’m always searching for new ways to deliver the message that your health and what your body LOOKS like are two very different things.

But today, after reading through a TON of comments on some of my best body love posts, I realized there are a lot of health advocates, like me, who struggle with the notion of body love. There’s a lot of fear there. For some, telling people to love their bodies is somehow synonymous with telling people that their health doesn’t matter. Many people in the “fitness” world seem concerned that encouraging body acceptance is the same as “celebrating” obesity. That it’s going to turn everyone into unhealthy, overweight, lazy, crazy, blobs, lol. (“celebrate”, by the way, is a term they interpret from “not hating your body”. No parades or balloons. If you’re cool with your body and it’s bigger than the norm, some people just can’t wrap their heads around it.).

The truth is many people are actually terrified of body love. Some people outright can’t stand seeing someone love their body. In their heads, letting “fat” be okay and NOT demonized, is the same as giving people free reign to heart attack it out at McDonald’s everyday. As though saying “accept all bodies” is equivalent to “don’t give a flying f*ck about your health”.

I call bullshit on that one.
